Fragrance raw material
Description
Galbanum essential oil is an essential oil used as a fragrance raw material. Use it in perfumes, cosmetics, and other scented products.
Use
Galbanum essential oil has a green, spicy scent that is quite strong and can easily overpower a fragrance composition. Therefore, a 10% dilution can be beneficial. Use this in, for example, DPG, TEC, or strong alcohol. It combines well with scents such as citrus, wood, herbs, and spices. It is also a classic green note in certain floral fragrances such as hyacinth, gardenia, and tuberose. It works particularly well in fougère, chypre, but also in fragrances with lavender or rose. It is primarily a top note in perfumes and is quite stable in many products, including soap.
Store in a cool, dry, and dark place.
Properties
Galbanum essential oil is a colourless to pale yellow liquid at room temperature. The substance is sensitive to sunlight and atmospheric oxygen and therefore has a limited shelf life. To meet IFRA requirements, we add a small amount of tocopherol (Vitamin E) to this oil to reduce the risk of oxidation. Otherwise, it is a pure essential oil.
The oil is produced by steam distillation from the resin of the galbanum plant. This resin is produced by incising the rhizome of the plant, which releases a sap that resinifies. Because the production and extraction of this resin is widespread and traditional, the resin can vary in quality and origin. In any case, the source plant is a member of the Ferula Tourn. ex L. genus. If a species name is desired, Ferula Gummosa Boiss is usually chosen. Other species names sometimes used in the trade are F. Galbaniflua, F. Galbanifera, and F. Gumosa.
The plants used are generally wild-collected, but insofar as they are cultivated, no artificial fertilizers have been used and no or minimal pesticides have been used.
Like any essential oil, this one is also a mixture of various substances. The composition is as follows:
> 25% - Beta Pinene
5-10% - Alpha Pinene, Bulnesol, Delta-3-Carene, Myrcene
2-5% - Guaiol, Limonene
