Description

Methoxymethylbutanol (MMB) is a fragrance carrier and solvent, specifically designed for use in reed diffuser air fresheners.

Caution!

Before purchasing, read all information below and the general product information.
Not intended for use in food, vape liquids, or other internal use.
Although it can be used on the skin, it is intended for use in air fresheners, not cosmetics.

Use

Methoxymethylbutanol (MMB) has virtually no odour, perhaps a hint of mint or ether. If it were an aromachemical, it would be considered a top note; the liquid evaporates quite well and evenly. This combination of properties makes it the ideal carrier for fragrances in reed diffuser liquids and several other diffuser liquids. Many fragrances dissolve easily in it; in that respect, it is similar to alcohol and DPG. It's therefore simple to use: mix it with the desired fragrances in the desired ratio, and you're done. A concentration of 30-50% fragrance is common.
Methoxymethylbutanol (MMB) has a flash point of 71°C. This means that only at a temperature of 71°C or more a spark is sufficient to ignite it. This is quite a high temperature, which is why we are allowed to ship it and why we don't need to provide information about its flammability on the label. Should you want to reduce its flammability, it mixes with water in any ratio. Adding 5-10% water increases the flash point so much that it's no longer measurable. The downside, however, is that fewer fragrances will dissolve in it.

Although the substance itself may be used in cosmetics, this is unusual, and there is little experience with it. For this reason, we do not recommend its use.

Store in a cool, dry, dark place, and out of reach of children.

Properties

Methoxymethylbutanol (MMB) is a colourless to pale yellow liquid at room temperature. Its purity is at least 99% and it has a relatively long shelf life. It is a synthetic substance based on fossil fuels. The manufacturer is Kuraray, a Japanese company.
Like many fragrances, this substance is quite volatile. Be sure to store it in a tightly closed container until use, otherwise the bottle may empty unnoticed over time.
