Fragrance raw material

Dipropylene Glycol (DPG)

Description

Dipropylene glycol (DPG) is a widely used solvent for dissolving fragrances.

Use

Dipropylene glycol (DPG) can be used to dissolve fragrances. Not all fragrances dissolve in it and not to every concentration. Apart from that, dipropylene glycol does not mix with any end product.

We indicate for different fragrances whether these dissolve in DPG and also what concentration is feasible. Note that solubility also depends on temperature. This means that heating the DPG in a water bath can help dissolve a substance, but also that at low temperatures the substance can become dissolving.

In general, it is easiest to test whether a substance dissolves in DPG, the concentration can also be determined by testing. A theoretical first approximation is also possible. Rules of thumb are that a low log Pow (maximum 3 to 4) is an indication that a substance dissolves in DPG. Furthermore, aromatics are less readily converted into DPG than other compounds.

The final product must mix with water or alcohol, so be fairly polar. For nonpolar substances such as oil, grease, wax and the like, it is better to use another solvent, for example isopropyl myristate (IPM).

Not intended for use in food, e-smoking products and other internal use.

Properties

Dipropylene glycol (DPG) is a clear, colorless, virtually odourless, viscous liquid at room temperature. The purity is at least 99%. Fairly long lasting, although it can develop a slight odor over time. It is a completely synthetic product, although it is possible to make it from vegetable raw materials.

Packaging

The packages up to 1 liter are made of brown plastic (PET) with a black plastic (PP) cap. Larger containers are made of translucent plastic (PE) with a black plastic (PP) cap.

Dangers

Dipropylene glycol is not classified as hazardous under REACH/CLP legislation. Nevertheless, we recommend that you handle all substances with care: keep out of the reach of children.
