Attention!

Please read all information below and the general product information before purchasing.
Not intended for use in food, vape liquids or other internal use.
Intended to be mixed with other fragrances: on its own the scent can be dull or even unpleasant.
Do not use undiluted on the skin: it is a raw material, not a finished product.

Use

Musk ketone has an animalic musky fragrance, sweet, sweaty and powdery. The scent is not particularly strong, but because it is a solid, making a dilution of, for example, 10% is useful. That is not easy, but with a little heating you can dissolve it in Diethyl Phthalate (DEP) and also in Benzyl Benzoate. Typical use is in classic, powdery musk accords. You usually use between 0,1% and 5% of this substance in the fragrance composition. It is a completely unique scent, the only alternatives are no longer allowed in cosmetics. The story goes that the original version of Chanel No. 5 contained more than 10% nitromusk, including musk ketone. In perfumes it is mainly a base note.

Store in a cool, dry, dark place and out of the reach of children.

Properties

Musk ketone is a white to yellow-brown, coarse powder at room temperature. The purity is at least 98% and the substance has a long shelf life. It is a so-called nitromusk, a synthetic musk fragrance. It is among the earliest man-made fragrances. It does not occur in nature.

This fragrance will not smell good to everyone: especially in its pure form and without other fragrances. It is also conceivable that sometimes it works and other times it doesn't, one batch works and the other batch doesn't.

In the EU, the use of musk ketone in cosmetics is restricted. A perfume may contain a maximum of 1,4% musk ketone, a maximum of 0,56% in an eau de toilette and a maximum of 0,042% in other products.

It contains less than 0,1% Musk xylene.

Sustainability

This fragrance raw material is perhaps the least sustainable in our range. This fragrance is made from petrochemicals such as petroleum. The manufacturing process is risky and explosive, which is why the substance has not been made in Europe for a long time. We have no idea under what conditions the substance is made and how well the safety and health of employees, local residents and the environment are taken care of. The degradability in the environment is extremely poor, in the standard tests for this it did not seem to degrade at all in water. Even though it is poisonous to fish and other aquatic organisms. Then it is also suspected of causing cancer.

The only reason we still sell this substance is that it is an irreplaceable fragrance. There are other musk fragrances, but none have a similar scent as the nitro musks. A fragrance group that has played an extremely important role in the history of perfume. Musk ketone is, practically speaking, the only fragrance from this group still permitted in cosmetics. We therefore want to keep this fragrance because of its cultural value. However, with the recommendation to use this substance with the greatest restraint, or better: only as a reference.

Dangers

Musk ketone is classified as a hazardous substance, with the following characteristics:

DANGER
H351 - Suspected of causing cancer.
H400 - Very toxic to aquatic organisms.
H410 - Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

An allergic reaction to this substance is unusual, but cannot be ruled out.
