Isobutyl salicylate

Isobutyl salicylate is a fragrance for use in, for example, perfume, cosmetics, soap and air fresheners.

Use

Isobutyl salicylate has a somewhat hay-like, light fresh floral scent that is often imaginatively described as clover or orchid fragrance. The odour is not very strong or overpowering, so undiluted use is common. It has the signature somewhat metallic background smell that all salicylates share. Typical usage is in fantasy accords with names like clover and orchid. In such accords you use, for example, 30 to 50% of this substance or more in the fragrance composition. It can serve well in accords for field flowers, lavender, hay, grass or tuberose, as well as fougère types. The dose is often between 1 and 15%, very low doses are unusual. A creative perfumer will find that it can be used in many fragrances. The material is a classic synthetic fragrance but seems to have been undervalued in recent decades: time for a revival! It is often a heart note or base note in perfumes. It is stable in most products, it can also be used well in soap, provided it is not dosed too low. Keep cool, dry, dark and out of reach of children.

Properties

Isobutyl salicylate is a colourless to pale yellow liquid at room temperature. The purity is at least 98%; it has a fairly long shelf life. It is rare in nature, such an exception, for example, is the magnolia. For use as a fragrance, the synthetic version is used, mainly based on petrochemicals.

Packaging

The 10 and 50 ml packaging is made of brown glass with a black cap. The 250 g package is made of aluminum with a stopper and a white cap.

Dangers

Isobutyl salicylate is classified as a hazardous substance, with the following characteristics: WARNING H302 - Harmful if swallowed. H400 - Very toxic to aquatic life. H411 ??- Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. An allergic reaction is uncommon.
