Amyl cinnamal

Amyl cinnamal is an aroma chemical for use in, for example, perfume, soap and air fresheners.

Use

Amyl cinnamal has a greasy, but also somewhat spicy smell. This fragrance is reminiscent of flowers such as jasmine and gardenia. The fragrance is not very strong, so it can be used undiluted. Typical use is in jasmine accords, additionally in ambers. You usually use between 0,5% and 25% of this substance in the fragrance composition. In smaller quantities, it fits in many perfumes, for example in fruit and floral scents. In larger quantities, it is mainly used in amber perfumes with a strong jasmine scent. It is primarily a base note in perfumes (Poucher: 100) and is stable in many products, including soap.

Keep cool, dry, dark and out of reach of children. De Hekserij does not sell products that are intended for internal use, as a flavoring or otherwise, this also applies to use in products for electric smoking.

A good way to investigate the effect of this substance on the accord is to make the above formulation twice, the second time replacing the amyl cinnamic aldehyde with DPG.

Properties

Amyl cinnamal is a colourless to slightly yellow liquid at room temperature, the purity is at least 96%. The substance is sensitive to oxygen from the air and therefore does not have a very long shelf life. The manufacturer adds 0,2 % tert butylhydroquinone to it as antioxidant, but nevertheless we recommend to replace this material at least once a year. The substance occurs in nature, but the synthetic version is used for use as a fragrance.

Other names include 2-benzylidene heptanal, amyl cinnamal, amyl cinnamaldehyde, amylcinnamic aldehyde, alpha cinnamic aldehyde, and alpha amyl cinnamic aldehyde. The alpha form is the usual kind used in the perfume world. It may react with anthranilates, but that is usually not a problem.

Packaging

The 10 and 50 ml pack is made of brown glass with a black cap, the 250 g pack is made of aluminium with a white cap. The packs do not have droppers.

Amyl cinnamic aldehyde is classified as a hazardous substance, with the following characteristics:

H317 - May cause an allergic skin reaction.
H411 - Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

It is an allergenic substance and one of the substances that sometimes has to be listed (as amyl cinnamal) on the label of cosmetics. This depends on the concentration of the substance in the product.
