Cosmetics raw material
Description
Glycerin or glycerol is a very versatile raw material for cosmetics.
Use
Glycerin is mainly used in cosmetics as a humectant. A humectant is a substance that attracts moisture, thereby preventing the product from drying out. In addition, in a not too high dose, and temporarily, it can ensure that the skin (or hair) can retain a little more water. A usual dose as a humectant is 2-5%. A very high dose (> 20%), such as rose glycerine, is less advisable with stay-on products, as it can dry out the skin.
It is also used to make extracts from plant parts. That is indeed possible, the extracts will be similar in composition to extracts made with water or with other polyalcohols. An extract of glycerin has the advantage over an extract of water that glycerin extracts do not easily spoil. For this it is necessary that the glycerin concentration is and remains at least 40%. Keep in mind that plant parts often consist of more than 90% water.
De Hekserij does not sell products intended for use in foodstuffs or for other internal use. This product is NOT an exception.
Properties
At room temperature, glycerine is a clear, colourless, virtually odourless, viscous liquid that has a long shelf life.
Also called glycerol or 1,2,3-propanetriol, glycerin is a so-called polyalcohol. Together with fatty acids, it is the building block of all natural fats and oils. It can be made from animal or vegetable oil, but also from petroleum, for example.
Our glycerin is made from vegetable oil and has a concentration of 99% when stored dry. The density is about 1,26, that is, 1 liter of glycerine weighs about 1,26 kg. For that reason, 5 kg of glycerine occupies a volume of less than 4 liters.
Sustainability
The glycerine we sell is a by-product of oleochemistry: the industry that processes vegetable and animal oils and fats. In our case vegetable, it can be made from any kind of vegetable oil. It is harmless to plants and animals and breaks down easily in the environment.
Packaging
The packages up to 1 liter are packed in brown plastic (PET), the larger packages in HDPE jerry cans. The closures are in all cases made of black plastic (PP). A jerry can key can be ordered for the 5 kg packaging for easier opening. This does not fit on the 25 kg package.
Dangers
Glycerin is not classified as a hazardous substance (REACH/CLP). Nevertheless, we recommend that you always handle substances with care: keep out of the reach of children.
