Description

Butylene glycol is a humectant and solvent for use in cosmetics.

Use

The use is very simple: mix with the other ingredients of the formula and it is ready, heating is not necessary. When used in an emulsion: use it in the water phase.

Normal use is about 0.5-5% in the final product, at a higher dosage the product can become sticky. There is no legal maximum dosage.

When making plant extracts, the order is as follows: Mix the plant parts with the butylene glycol and soak them there for the prescribed time, for example a month. Provide clean, dry plant parts. Then filter the butylene glycol and the plant extract is ready for use.

De Hekserij does not sell products that are intended for use in food or for other internal use. This product is NOT an exception. We also strongly advise against using this product in aroma mixtures for e-smoking: we have no idea whether the quality we sell is suitable for this.

Properties

Butylene glycol is a colourless, practically odourless liquid at room temperature. The compound has a long shelf life, but it should be kept cool, dry, dark and in the tightly closed packaging.

There are four stable chemical forms of butylene glycol; ours is 1,3-butylene glycol.

It can be used almost anywhere where propylene glycol and glycerine can be used, but the properties are slightly different each time. For example, a product with 10% butylene glycol will normally no longer be affected by micro-organisms. With propylene glycol this occurs at 20% and with glycerine 40% is required. Certain active ingredients from plants will dissolve better in butylene glycol than in propylene glycol, and vice versa.

In the skin, it is converted into gamma hydroxybutyric acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the skin.

Durability

Butylene glycol is normally made from petrochemical raw materials, although it is possible to use renewable raw materials. It is easily degradable and also has a very low toxicity to animals, plants and other organisms.

Packaging

We pack this product in brown plastic (PET) bottles with a black plastic (PP) cap.

Hazards

Butylene glycol is not classified as a hazardous substance. Nevertheless, we recommend that you always handle substances safely and keep them out of the reach of children.
