Xanthan gum

Description

Xanthan gum is a natural gum used as a thickener and expectorant.

Use

Xanthan gum is used to make an aqueous mixture more viscous (more "thicker"). For example, with a deodorant that consists of water and water-miscible active ingredients, or a shampoo or shower gel. In emulsions such as creams, a small amount of xanthan gum can stabilize the emulsion and make it less likely to disintegrate in a water and oil layer.

We recommend xanthan gum as a thickener in toothpastes made by schools. Many schools use CMC / carboxymethyl cellulose, or better: the sodium salt (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose / NaCMC / NCMC). In itself an excellent thickener in the industry, but there is a disadvantage for schools: thickening takes much longer with CMC than with xanthan. Students do not always have the focus to wait that long and do not have to: xanthan is an excellent thickener and the type we sell is suitable and safe for toothpaste.

There are also applications outside of cosmetics, for example for making bubble blower soap for extra large bubbles.

Although the substance dissolves fairly well in cold water, it is advisable to first mix the xanthan gum with the surfactants, glycerine or other viscous liquids. Stir well and only then add the water, this prevents lumps. Xanthan gum is an excellent food for micro-organisms, think of sufficient preservation of the product.

The Hekserij does not sell products that are intended for use in food or for other internal use.

Properties

Xanthan gum (also called xanthan or xantane) is a gum made by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris. Due to the controlled conditions in which xanthan gum is made, the quality is much more regular than that of, for example, gum arabic. The gum is a polysaccharide, like starch, and is made up of certain types of sugars.

Store it dry, so do NOT store in the refrigerator. Also keep it cool, dark and in the well-closed packaging. Keep out of reach of children.
