Description

Hydroxycitronellal is a fragrance for use in, for example, perfume, soap and air fresheners.

Use

Hydroxycitronellal has a fresh green scent that is especially reminiscent of lily of the valley. The scent is not very strong, so it can be used undiluted. Typical use is in green floral accords, but it can also be used in many blossom scents and jasmine. You usually use between 0,1% and 10% of this substance in the fragrance composition and in perfumes it is mainly a base note. It is an aldehyde, yet also quite stable: can be used in soap.

Keep cool, dry, dark and out of reach of children.

Properties

Hydroxycitronellal is a colourless to pale yellow liquid at room temperature. The purity is at least 98%, the substance has a fairly long shelf life. The substance is virtually non-existent in nature.

It was one of the first synthetics used to mimic the scent of the lily of the valley. Until then (around 1910) a good perfume that smells like the lily of the valley could not be made because there were no natural substances available. Incidentally, it is also used for other floral scents, especially where a white/green floral scent is needed.

Packaging

The 10 and 50 ml packaging is made of brown glass with a black cap. The 250 g package is made of aluminium with a white cap.

Dangers

Hydroxycitronellal is classified as a dangerous substance, with the following characteristics:

H319 - Causes serious eye irritation.

It is one of the 26 allergens that must be listed on the packaging of cosmetics in certain cases. Cosmetics may contain a maximum of 1% of the substance (in the end product).
