Benzoin tincture is a natural extract, intended for use as a fragrance.

Use

As a fragrance, tincture of benzoin can be mixed with the other fragrances in a mixture. Due to the high alcohol content, it can easily be used in alcohol-based perfumes. This is not always possible in other products, such as products with a lot of water.

Benzoin tincture has a sweet, balsamic vanilla scent. The scent is not particularly strong and the product is in fact already a mixture of fragrances diluted in alcohol. It can therefore be used undiluted. You usually use between 0,2% and 5% of this substance in the fragrance composition. Traditional use is as a fixator for cologne, usually about 2% in total. It can be used anywhere you would consider benzoin resinoid, heliotropine or vanillin: sweet warm scents. In perfumes it is mainly a base note.

We do not recommend using it as a preservative. There are better, more effective, less dangerous materials these days. Because it is actually no longer used for this purpose, it is not known what an effective dose is and in which cases it does not work.

Even moe old fashioned is the use as a wound dressing. The tincture was applied to a wound. The alcohol killed the microorganisms and evaporated. The resin remained and covered the wound. With current insights, this is not good practice, so do not use tincture of benzoin for this purpose.

Properties

Benzoin tincture is a yellow-orange liquid that dries very sticky. The tincture is prepared by De Hekserij according to recipes from the somewhat older perfume literature (19th and early 20th century), namely by allowing about 40 parts by weight of benzoin Siam resin to infuse for at least one month on 60 parts by weight of 96% alcohol. After this, the tincture is filtered.

The composition can be slightly different per batch due to the traditional preparation from natural substances.

Packaging

The 10 ml pack is made of brown glass with a black cap. The 50 ml pack is made of aluminium with a white cap.
